INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Former Lakers lead assistant Brian Shaw has interviewed with the Indiana Pacers, and he could be on the staff within a week.

The Spurs kicked off an unusually busy draft for coach Gregg Popovich by trading backup point guard George Hill to the Indiana Pacers for their first-round pick, 6-foot-7 forward Kawhi Leonard of San Diego State. San Antonio then picked Texas guard Cory Joseph at No. 29 overall.

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - The San Antonio Spurs have reportedly traded backup guard George Hill to the Indiana Pacers for the draft rights to Kawhi Leonard. Several media sources reported the trade, which has yet to become official. The Spurs also obtained Indiana's 42nd overall pick in the draft. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana Pacers President Larry Bird hasn't hidden his admiration for BYU's Jimmer Fredette and Providence's Marshon Brooks, two high-scoring guards expected to be picked in Thursday night's draft.

``They're both good players,'' Bird said. ``If you watch a lot of tape, if you're out seeing them, they're both going to be good NBA players.''

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Former BYU star Jimmer Fredette has started his NBA workouts.

Fredette worked out for the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday. He says he also plans workouts with the Knicks, Sacramento, Utah and Phoenix.

Fredette led the Cougars to a No. 3 seed in the 2011 NCAA tournament and started all 37 games of the season, averaging 28.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game.

LLAS (AP) - The Dallas Mavericks are early in a seven- or nine-day wait for the start of the Western Conference finals. That's nothing for coach Rick Carlisle.

He once went 11 days between series.

It was 2004 and Carlisle was coaching the Indiana Pacers. They wrapped up a first-round sweep of the Boston Celtics on a Sunday, then had to sit around until a week from Thursday because the series that decided their next foe went seven games.
