Primeau powers Flames past Coyotes

02/27/2007 - Calgary, AB (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Wayne Primeau scored twice as the Calgary Flames downed the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-2, at Pengrowth Saddledome.

David Moss, Kristian Huselius and Andrei Zyuzin each had a goal for the Flames, who have won their last two games.

Jamie McLennan made 30 saves for Calgary, which has 75 points and is in a tie for the seventh spot in the Western Conference.

Cyanic Peroral and Steven Reinprecht each had a goal for the Coyotes, who have dropped seven of their last eight games. Mikael Tellqvist stopped 28 shots in the loss.

The Flames scored the first three goals of the contest to take control of the game.

Halfway through the first period, Alex Tanguay sent a pass from the right side across the goalmouth to Moss, who banged it into the net on his second attempt for his seventh goal of the season.

In the final minute of the first period Huselius fired a wrist shot from the right circle that went into the left corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Just 5:27 into the second period, Primeau picked up an errant clearing attempt and backhanded a shot from the low slot that went between the pads of Tellqvist for his eighth goal of the season.

Phoenix finally got on the scoreboard with a power-play goal when a slap shot in the high slot by Derek Morris was tipped by Peroral, to make it a 3-1 game eight minutes into the second.

The Flames, though, got the goal back a little over four minutes later when a slap shot by Zyuzin found its way through a screen and into the back of the net.

Just 40 seconds later, another Phoenix turnover led to a Calgary goal when Tony Amonte intercepted an ill-advised pass and from the low left side gave the puck to Primeau, who blasted a one-timer past Tellqvist for a 5-1 lead.

Phoenix got the final goal of the game when a wrist shot by Reinprecht in the high slot went through a screen and into the net with 6:42 to play.

El Duque expected to throw Tuesday

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- New York Mets pitcher Orlando Hernandez, sidelined at spring training because of arthritis in his neck, is expected to resume throwing on Tuesday.

Hernandez received a cortisone shot Thursday after leaving camp and returning to New York to have his neck examined. The 41-year-old right-hander is penciled in as the team's No. 2 starter behind Tom Glavine.

El Duque's health is a major issue for the Mets, who won the NL East in 2007 and came within one victory of the World Series. Their aging and unsettled rotation is a big question mark this year.

MySportsbook.com has the Mets as -110 favorites to repeat as NL East champions odds

Hernandez went 11-11 with a 4.66 ERA last season, including 9-7 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts after the Mets acquired him from Arizona in late May. But he missed the playoffs because of a torn calf muscle.

New York already is without Pedro Martinez, out until at least midseason following rotator cuff surgery. Among those competing for starting jobs are prospects Mike Pelfrey, Philip Humber and Jason Vargas, plus veterans Chan Ho Park, Jorge Sosa and Aaron Sele.

Notes: Mets manager Willie Randolph is excited about two new utility players he could have on his bench: Damion Easley and David Newhan. ''Their value is really all over the place,'' Randolph said. Easley can play anywhere in the infield and could be used as an emergency outfielder, though Randolph said he would prefer to keep the veteran in the infield. Newhan, meanwhile, can play second base, third or any outfield position for the Mets. ''I love versatility,'' Randolph said. ''I love guys that can give me options when I need them to step in.''
